Longfellow Park Chapel

As I was curling Maggie's hair for church this morning at 9:30 (Pacific Time) I got a phone call from my younger brother Logan in Boston. He said, "Jillaire, the Longfellow Park Chapel is burning down!" I was stunned.

The Longfellow Park Chapel is the building for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cambridge, Massachusetts that I attended for four of the five years I lived in Boston. I was there my first Sunday after spending my first few culture-shocked days as a freshman at Boston College. I spent every Sunday there at my church meetings and then stayed after for our weekly dinner. I can still remember my first dinner there. During the fall of my sophomore year, it was at one of those church dinners that I met my future husband. He claims his crush on me began during a ward skit night in that building. After Damon proposed to me in Rockport, MA, we returned to the city and went to the Longfellow Park building for an Institute dinner and a movie night, where we realized we wouldn't be able to conceal our news from all our friends. Wanting to tell my parents first, I used a telephone in the Family History Center upstairs to call my mom and tell her I was engaged.

I remember walking along the cobblestone sidewalks from the Harvard Square T-stop toward the chapel on Brattle Street, just across the road from the historic Henry Wadsworth Longfellow house, the namesake of the grassy area in front of the church and of the chapel itself. I made that walk in heat, humidity, rain, and snow. I made so many friends in that building and had so many spiritual experiences that contributed to my commitment to and faith in the gospel.

This morning Logan told me that he was attending stake conference (a meeting of several wards) in an auditorium at MIT (the Cambridge Stake, created in 1998, has no stake center; they are at least a year away from completing one) when his friend got a text message from a fellow ward member who was attending a closed-circuit broadcast of the meeting at the Longfellow Park Chapel. During the second speaker's talk someone smelled smoke and the fire alarm went off. Soon smoke was pouring from the roof, which eventually collapsed. The windows were blown out, including a circular one in the chapel that was directly behind the stand--essentially the view remembered by those of us who attended sacrament meetings there. Everyone evacuated and there were no reported injuries.
When stake conference was over, Logan and his wife went over to the chapel where there were still 8 to 10 fire trucks fighting the fire. He said the building basically looked gutted. There was water pouring out the front door, down the steps, and into the street. Three wards met in that building, which also housed offices and a library for the Boston Institute of Religion. It is a sad loss for what this building represented of the Church's history in Boston and for what it meant to those of us who attended church there.

In these photos, taken by Logan on his cell phone, the steeple is still standing. I hope they are able to salvage it in a rebuild. The Longfellow building just wouldn't be the same without it.
Here you can see the streams of water pouring onto the roof and steeple from at least 3 ladder trucks. Notice the sky is gray with the smoke.
Here you can see the blown-out frame of the chapel's circular window.
Here is a view of the side and back of the building.

Update: If you want to see video footage of the fire, go here: Fire Video. Here are some aerial photographs taken the day after the fire: Helicopter Photos.

This building was the spiritual home for many of us, who have all been saddened and feel deeply about the loss. Sam Brown, an "alumnus" of this building created an "In Memoriam" webpage to which many have posted their memories of this chapel. As Damon put it, "Even to this day, whenever I read in Mosiah about the waters of Mormon and 'how beautiful they are to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer,' I think of that building and how my testimony of Christ, and every other good thing I have now, come from the years I spent there."

Playing in the Rain

Gunnar had a ball playing in the rain a couple Saturdays ago. We had been outside working on the house, car, and yard all day. I was still cleaning up the last of the tools when the downpour began. Gunnar didn't mind a bit.

Don't worry. Those extension cords are meant to be used in the rain, right?

I'm not really sure what he was putting in his mouth there. Probably dirt or rocks.

We've Got Talent

Last Saturday was our ward talent show at church. The Young Women and I planned a fun act based on the following video, which we all found hysterical.

I freely admit that our own routine wasn't quite as good, but we got laughs and had fun, which is what we were going for. I don't think anyone recorded ours on video, so don't look for it on YouTube. Oh well.

Adah and Maggie also decided to showcase their talents, resulting in Adah's first public piano performance. She played two songs: "Banana Split" and the theme from "Star Wars" while Maggie danced on stage.

Sold!

With some kind of record-breaking speed, we sold our 1992 Honda Accord today. Less than 6 hours after creating our craigslist ad, the happy buyers were driving away and we had cash in hand. (We also fielded about half a dozen other phone inquiries.) This car has been used by Damon for commuting for the last 3 years and became unnecessary after the purchase of our truck four weeks ago.My parents will probably be amazed to hear that we were even able to sell this vehicle since they were visiting when the ignition seized in a store parking lot 30 miles from home. For the next 6 months we started the car by sticking a screwdriver into the ignition switch which was just hanging there by some wires. The switch was eventually replaced, requiring different keys for locking and driving.

The car suffers from a few such idiosyncrasies, but we disclosed them and sold it for less than the Kelly Blue Book "fair" price, so we don't think the buyers will be too surprised by it's as-is condition. As for us, we are happy to no longer own a car with such peculiar behaviors and to be back to being a two-car family.

PTO Silent Auction

Every year the Parent Teacher Organization (PTA everywhere else) at Adah's elementary school hosts a silent auction to raise money for school assemblies, materials, playground equipment, and all kinds of other things that the PTO does to supplement the district programs and budget.

Local businesses and citizens donate merchandise, gift certificates, and services that are displayed for bidding at the Friday-night event that is open to the whole community. I was involved with donation procurement, making calls to about 40 businesses. I also put together and donated this "Apple Box" full of some home preserves and dried apples from my favorite local orchard.

My other job was gift certificate display. Basically I got to use my scrapbooking skills to jazz up the simple papers that described all the donations that were not physical items at the auction. I had no idea what a commitment that would turn out to be. I was up until 2 am Friday morning and then spent about 6 hours setting up at the school on Friday.

Here are Maggie and Adah just after entering the gym as the auction began. The tables and walls were full of items up for bidding. Each person at the auction registered for a bidder number and then put their number and dollar bid on the bid sheet next to the item they wanted.

It was A LOT of work, but well worth the effort. Early reports indicate that the auction raised $13,000 for the school!!

Adah's Faceplant Recovery

For those who have been wondering about the healing of Adah's face after her fall last week, here are some photos of how it's coming along. It has been the source of many questions for Adah from friends and strangers alike. She's handling it with grace.

Spring is in the Air

Without even trying, I tricked my neighbor into taking 4 extra kids this afternoon! We had two extras after school and when the neighbor boy came over to invite my girls to jump on the trampoline, I got to send all four! Now Gunnar is napping and, other than the squeals and yells I can hear coming from the neighbor's yard, it is very quiet around here. I decided to take the opportunity to catch up on blogs--reading others and posting on my own.

Springtime has finally come to White Salmon with daffodils now nearly on the way out, tulips up, and the first blooming dogwood sighted just today! I missed a bit of all the lovely weather when I flew to Denver last weekend, arriving just a few hours before a snow storm. Luckily it warmed up before I left and my visit to my brother Jed and his family ended on a sunny note. Many thanks go to my wonderful husband for taking over in full here at home so that I could make the 4-day solo trip to Colorado.

With all of this sunnier and warmer weather has come lots of outside time for my kids. Maggie and Gunnar enjoyed the new patio just after our visit to Utah.

While I was gone, Damon hung a swing from one of our front-yard trees. This tree was host to one end of our zipline last year. The zipline will need some redesigning this year since the other end was attached to our shed which will finally get siding; we'll need a new anchor. Maybe I can "trick" my neighbor into taking that to his house, too!

Adah's Cirque du Soleil routine. Neighbor Claire looks on. Gunnar is unimpressed.

Maggie loves swinging, dislikes wearing shoes.

Yesterday after picking up Adah from school, we decided to stay and play on the school playground. Gunnar loves going down this tunnel slide . . .

... head first! (We have to catch him. It's really fast.)

Kid Update: Before I was able to finish composing this post, all 4 kids returned, Adah in tears. She tripped and landed face-first in the gravel driveway! She got some nice scratches near her left eye and on the bridge of her nose, and may end up with a nice bruise above her eyebrow tomorrow. Poor kid.
